The Inner Work Comes First: Growing in the Dark Before the Bloom

There is a season beneath the surface where nothing seems to move — but everything is evolving in slow motion, in my own rhythm.

It doesn’t look like growth — it looks like silence, stillness, and doubt.

It looks like wondering if I’m falling behind while the rest of the world is blooming.

But in truth, this is where the real becoming begins.

When I first encountered John C. Maxwell’s Law of the Mirror —

“You must see value in yourself to add value to yourself”

— something inside me paused. Because for a long time, I didn’t.

Not fully. Not consistently. Not when it was quiet. That quote? It unlocked the next level of self-trust — something I hadn’t yet learned.

 The Mirror I Avoided

There were years when I measured my worth by what I could offer to others — my productivity, my helpfulness, my emotional strength.

If I wasn’t giving, fixing, or supporting, I felt… invisible.

When things fell apart — relationships, routines, roles — I had to face the stillness I’d been avoiding.

There was no external validation. Just me, the mirror, and the ache of asking:

What if I’m enough even when I’m not proving it?

Often, it takes a breaking point — a moment that strips away our roles — to bring us face-to-face with the mirror.

For me, it was stepping into the world as a newcomer.

Learning how this world functions and what society expects from someone like me felt like a forced phase — not because I wasn’t prepared, but because I was trying to piece the puzzle together using the values I was taught by my parents and in school.

I had the knowledge. What I lacked was courage.

So, I started searching. I looked at how others moved forward, how they succeeded.

I attended conferences. Webinars. I read. And that’s when I discovered The Coffee Bean, The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, and others that quietly guided me back to myself.

 Growing Underground

While working and navigating difficulties — like having ideas stolen or projects taken — I began to pause.

With the guidance I’d found, I started to ask: What is really happening here? And what does it say about how I see myself?

It took time — more than a moment — to truly see my own value.

To admit that I am unique the way I am.

That I do have the courage to follow my dreams.

Moving forward, I began to understand that we need guidance in this process — because healing doesn’t come like a sunrise.

It comes like roots: invisible, stubborn, and slow.

I started journaling again (this time, publicly shared) — not for clarity, but for honesty. For myself, and for anyone else who might need the comfort of a story like mine.

I chose softness in moments I once met with shame.

I practiced self-worth not through mantras, but through choices:

  • Resting without guilt
  • Saying no without apology
  • Showing up for myself without an audience

Because the inner work isn’t flashy.

It’s what happens in the unseen — in the pauses between chapters, in the moments when you water yourself with silence.

In order to grow, you need to set priorities and expectations. But here’s the big question:

Whose expectations are you following — yours, or someone else’s?

I asked myself this a few years ago and realized how deeply my own had become tangled with family or coworkers’ needs.

So I did a small check-in… and started again.

I found strength in books, in reflection, in giving myself permission to improve.

And I promised myself: I will never give up on believing in myself and in what I can do and offer.

 A Law That Changed Me

Maxwell’s Law of the Mirror reminded me that I couldn’t expect to grow if I didn’t believe I was worth growing in the first place.

“You must see value in yourself to add value to yourself.”

Not because you’re perfect. But because you’re becoming.

And you don’t need proof to believe in your own unfolding.

So I say:

Stay open. Learn what resonates. Define your own rhythm.

And when the noise fades, look at your reflection and value yourself.

It won’t be easy, and it won’t be a miracle.

But it will show you the way.

 Where You Are Is Sacred

So if you’re in a quiet chapter right now — a time where the healing is invisible and the progress is private — I want you to know:

You are not behind.

You are not broken.

You are growing in the dark.

And soon, the bloom will come.

But for now, let your roots deepen.

Let the mirror reflect your becoming.

Because the real work — the inner work — isn’t flashy. It’s sacred.

 Reflection Prompt:

What’s one way I can choose to see my value today — even if no one else sees it?
