“You’re not too much. You’re just finally being seen.”
1. The Voice Inside
It doesn’t shout.
It whispers.
A subtle voice within us says: “Be careful. Be quiet. Don’t ask for too much.”
Sometimes, we mistake it for instinct, humility, or caution.
But what if it’s something else?
What if the voice isn’t yours at all?
From my own experience, I can share that there were painful moments – feelings I had to lock away to become the image my mother needed. I wasn’t allowed to be visible, to belong, or to be felt. Instead, I became silent, invisible, scared…….and deeply longing to leave. And eventually… I did.
In my last article, I explored how childhood beliefs shape adult patterns – and how healing begins with awareness.
Today, I want to go deeper: not just into why those beliefs formed, but how we begin to speak differently to the child who still lives within us.
Because healing doesn’t begin with proof – it begins with permission.
And the first permission we need to give ourselves is this: to be spoken to gently.
2. Naming the Bias
Sometimes our emotional biases hide in plain sight:
- “You’re too sensitive.”
- “You always ruin things.”
- “You don’t deserve to rest.”
- “No one really cares.”
- “It was your fault.”
- “Don’t make a mess. Pay attention to everything.”
We carry these phrases not because they’re true, but because they were spoken in moments that mattered – when our nervous system was open, our defenses were low, and our hearts craved safety.
We didn’t choose these messages.
We absorbed them.
And the body remembers what the mind tries to forget.
Eventually, we find ourselves asking:
“Why am I not enough? What is wrong with me? Why am I not desired?”
But these questions won’t stop unless we are willing to change the story.
For me, this meant shedding the coat passed down from my parents, my grandparents, even my first managers. I carried it for decades, adding layers built from hidden emotional “values.”
Now it’s time to unwrap it – because blaming myself or others doesn’t heal.
Awareness does and the actions you are willing to take further.
3. Not Blame…..Awareness
There’s a difference between blaming the past and understanding its impact.
The point isn’t to fault the people who couldn’t give us what we needed.
It’s to recognize that we internalized the gaps – and we still carry them.
And it’s important to remember:
Our parents, or grandparents, may have carried the very same feelings.
They, too, weren’t taught what to do with them.
How do I know this?
About 10 years ago, on a trip with my family, she told me something I didn’t fully understand at the time. She said:
“I would’ve liked to have had with you the kind of relationship you now have with your daughter.”
At that moment, it was just a passing comment.
But years later – while untangling some of my own reactions and hidden feelings – those words came back to me, and this time… I truly heard them.
The revelation?
We all carry our legacy coats. Worn. Inherited. Heavy.
But how we act or react moving forward – that is in our power.
Because you can make a difference.
And that difference begins with awareness.
With consciousness.
With the willingness to step up… and step out.
To unlock the cage.
To gently challenge what’s been passed down.
To dare to feel your own heart again.
With love, patience, and a bit of courage, you can begin to break the rules your legacy coat once taught you.
These voices might still whisper:
- “Stay quiet….it’s safer.”
- “Don’t cry…..they’ll get mad.”
- “Be useful…..or you’ll be invisible.”
But healing means saying:
I recognize, I accept, I release. And I begin again.
We can keep the memories – not as wounds, but as tattoos.
As reminders of who we were, and how far we’ve come.
You are your new instrument.
You get to write your own song now.
4. Reparenting: The Gentle Rewrite
Inner reparenting doesn’t require a perfect formula.
It begins with small, tender corrections…..soft truths spoken in place of old echoes:
- “Your feelings weren’t too much. You’re emotionally aware.”
- “You didn’t fail. You were learning.”
- “You were never a burden. You were a child asking to be held.”
- “You didn’t have to earn love. You were already worthy.”
- “You weren’t stupid. You needed guidance.”
Each of these is a soft rewrite – not a performance, but a truth.
The child inside you is still listening.
Let’s begin to say the things they never heard enough.
This isn’t just a comforting idea – it’s how the brain learns.
Repetition is not failure; it is the rhythm of transformation.
Science matters too:
Research shows that new neural pathways are built through repeated practice.
A 2009 study in The European Journal of Social Psychology found that habits can form in as little as 59 days, or take as long as 254…….depending on the behavior and the context.
So be gentle. Repeat as needed. Your brain will learn a new way to speak – with love.
Repetition is not failure; it is the rhythm of transformation.
So be patient. Be gentle.
Repeat as many times as it takes.
With every repetition, your inner voice learns a new language…..the language of self-love.
5. A Letter to My Younger Self
Journaling in any format helps us externalize our deepest thoughts and feelings.
If you can, pause. Take a breath.
Let your thoughts quiet… like a reset.
Then open your eyes, your heart, and begin writing a message to the little you.
It’s not to dwell – but to give closure. To make space.
Forgiveness and release aren’t one-time events. They’re practices of protection and grounding.
Here’s my letter:
Dear little me,
You didn’t do anything wrong.
You were scared, and still showed up.
You were confused, and still tried to understand.
You were small, but you carried so much.
I’m sorry you thought love had to be earned.
I’m sorry no one told you emotions weren’t dangerous.
I’m sorry you blamed yourself for the silence.
But I see you now.
I know what you needed….and I’m learning to give it to you.
I won’t abandon you in the name of “being fine.”
I’ll sit with you. I’ll speak gently. I’ll stay.
You are not too much.
You are enough.
You are safe now.
With love,
Me
6. Soft Reflection
Take a soft moment. Ask yourself:
- What phrase have I carried for years that was never truly mine?
- When did I start speaking harshly to myself and why?
- What gentle sentence can I say to my inner child right now?
Write it. Whisper it. Repeat it when it feels hard.
This is the work. This is the softness.
This is healing.
7. Closing Words
You don’t have to rush and you don’t need to fix yourself.
You don’t have to yell to reclaim your voice.
You don’t have to be loud to be powerful.
You just have to speak truthfully…….to the part of you that always needed gentleness.
Healing isn’t about proving yourself.
It’s about soothing the small voice within.
So…Speak softly.
Stay close.
Be in touch with yourself.
You’re not too much.
You’re just finally being heard.
